You just have to see Broken Flowers B, it's a work of art, a sublimely great film.
Permanent Vacation is so low-grade and amatuerish that it's pretty much unwatchable so don't even bother with it.

Though I do love Ghost Dog, I'm with you on Night on Earth to some extent, it's hit and miss. The Ryder and Benigni stories I like but is there anything worse than Rosie Perez and that nails-on-blackboard voice of hers!??! I wanna kick a bloody cat after hearing it! ;)

Hey David, cheers mate, you know I've never actually seen Permanent Vacation, nor have I seen Broken Flowers either. To be honest I don't like everything he does, but this and Dead Man, and Coffee and Cigarettes (curiously all in black and white) are brilliant. I did enjoy Year of the Horse too. Ghost Dog didn't do it for me, and I didn't like Night on Earth either. Still, the elements within his stylistics that I do like are so affecting that I rate him as one of my favourite directors.

Great review B, this was my first exposure to Jarmusch and though many of his subsequent films have surpassed it, it holds a special place for me too.

I also became a rabid Tom Waits fan because of it - that Rain Dogs album has actually been one of my all-time favourites ever since. I don't have many musical heroes outside of film music anymore but he's still one of them.

This is probably where Jarmusch's career really began, wasn't it? I tried to watch the earlier two and found them very tough going (in fact Permanent Vacation is absolutely godawful!)

I agree with your ranking of Dead Man too - for me it sits alongside Broken Flowers as his best, though there's something worthwhile in all of them.
